Within days of the Apple Watch Series 8 reaching customers, 9to5Mac reader Jason Smith He saw the value of his health features firsthand. Medical officials credit Jason’s Apple Watch Series 8 with discovering an invisible heart condition in his mother that would have been fatal if not detected early.

No suspicion of AFib

Jason tells us: “My parents were going away for the weekend to Chester (UK) when I got a call from my dad to say my mum wasn’t feeling well at all.” “He said she felt very dizzy and as if her heart was beating – I told them to stop and I would be with them ASAP.”

When Jason reached out to his parents, everything seemed to be under control despite the episode.

“Upon my arrival, I took her blood pressure and assessed her general condition, which was relatively normal considering what had happened,” Jason says. His mother told him she was feeling a lot better and nothing to worry about.

Then Jason wisely thought about using the new Apple Watch Series 8 at this moment.

With the exception of Apple SE models, Apple Watch Series 4 and later features a built-in ECG that allows users to measure the timing and strength of the electrical signals that make the heart beat. This can be crucial in identifying atrial fibrillation, or atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat that can be fatal when left undetected.

“Then I took my Apple Watch Series 8 and put it on her wrist for an ECG. This is the time the watch alerted us to say it detected atrial fibrillation and seek medical help immediately,” continues Jason. “I proceeded to take three more EKGs to rule out any false positives, but each reported AFib with a resting heart rate above 160 bpm.”

Lifesaving treatment

Convinced of the watch, Jason and his parents went to the nearest emergency room where medical officials confirmed that his mother had atrial fibrillation. It was there that his mother was told that immediate treatment was required.

What could have been a life-changing weekend is avoided thanks to the Apple Watch. Jason says his mom got back on track after the watch detected her heart condition.

“I am happy to report that after the hospital stay, and after being prescribed a number of different medications that she will have to take for the rest of her life, she is absolutely fine,” Jason tells us. “The NHS professionals who looked after her said that without the Apple Watch, there is a good chance it wouldn’t have worked through the rest of the day.”

Jason tells us it’s safe to say that his mom will get her own Apple Watch after what he did for it. We are all happy to hear that Jason’s mother is happy and healthy thanks to what the Apple Watch has made possible for so many.
