The members of Calgary Flames seem to have the same level of frustration with Matthew Tkachuk as their fan base does.

While 24-year-old Tkachuk hasn’t simply walked away from the organization as his former teammate Johnny Goudreau did, general manager Brad Treleving has essentially been forced to trade him. The American-born winger announced he was not interested in signing a long-term deal with the Flames, as a result of which he was sent to the Florida Panthers in July. The firefighters, the management and the technical staff were fairly calm on the matter, that is, until Thursday.

Jack Adams’ head coach and winner, Daryl Sutter, took an inaccurate photo of his former star when asked how he compares current Flames forward Tyler Toffoli to Tkachuk.

“One of the guys won the Stanley Cup and was a big part of the long playoff rounds,” Sutter said curtly.

Sutter has always been known for his funny quotes, but it’s very rare to hear something so candid from him. Although it may have been a joke, it sounded like a serious blow from the 64-year-old coaching legend.

Toffoli played under Sutter for the Los Angeles Kings for the first five years of his career, winning the Stanley Cup together in 2014. He clearly made a strong impression on the bench coach he met with in Alberta last season.

While Calgary did very well in the Tkachuk trade — landing Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar and Cole Schwindt and a conditional first-round pick from Florida — these comments from Sutter ensure the Flames-Panthers games will be TV watching ahead. The two sides will meet first in Florida on November 19, while the second and final meeting will take place in Calgary just 10 days later. You can bet the fans at Saddledome won’t give Tkachuk their warmest welcome on this issue.
