Biden suggests support for filibuster change to legalize abortion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Joe Biden challenged Democratic voters on Friday that if they elect at least two more senators in the November elections, it would open the door to the possibility of Democrats removing stalling and restoring federal abortion rights for women.

At a Democratic National Committee rally, Biden proposed that two additional Democrats allow the Democratic-controlled Senate to remove a legislative hurdle known as the blocking that would require a 60-vote majority to overcome.

Democrats now have a slim majority in the Senate, and two Democratic senators, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kirsten Sinema, opposed ending the disruption.

Biden’s note indicates that he would support a vote to end the disruption, which could be decided by a simple majority. For any such move to succeed, Democrats need to retain control of the House and gain two seats in the Senate. Most forecasters indicate that the Republicans are likely to control the House of Representatives.

Biden has made restoring the protections lost in the Supreme Court’s June decision to overturn the 1973 case Roe v. Wade, a central theme of his controversial speeches in the run-up to the November 8 congressional elections.

“If you give me two more United States Senators, I promise, I promise, we will codify Rowe and make Rowe the law of the land again,” Biden said.

Biden urged female voters to help elect Democrats.

“I don’t think the MAGA Republicans have an idea of the power of American women. Let me tell you something, they’re about to find out.”

According to the current population survey, voter turnout in 2020 was 68.4% for women and 65.0% for men. About 9.7 million women voted more than men. Since the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe, there has been a significant rise in women’s registration to vote.
